As a new normal way of life returns, these last few months have demonstrated how precious planet Earth is, and how important it is that we all start taking steps towards a greener way of life. If giving up your car and taking public transport is out of the question, perhaps investing in an eco-friendly car could be something to consider. But what exactly are the benefits?
Eco-friendly cars are becoming more affordable
As green cars become more commonplace, they are consequently becoming more affordable, with many priced on a par with conventional cars. As more people invest in eco-friendly alternatives the technology involved will also improve more rapidly, which will again drive down their cost.
Smaller running costs
While each car has a different fuel efficiency, the better the fuel efficiency the more environmentally friendly the car is likely to be − and the more you’ll save on your fuel bill. Not only does this mean you’ll save money, you’ll also save time on long journeys as you won’t have to stop every few hundred miles to fill up at a fuel station – and purchase the obligatory long journey sweet treats!
Cut your tax bill
While it’s true that ‘the only certainties in life are death and taxes’, the amount of Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) you pay is based on your car’s fuel type and level of CO2 emissions. The more fuel-efficient your model is the less tax you’ll have to pay. And if you choose a car with very low emissions, you’ll be completely exempt from paying VED – which in the long run could add up to a saving of thousands of pounds.
Avoid congestion charges
If you travel to London or live within the Congestion Charge zone, you will have to pay £15 per day, with a penalty of between £80 and £160 levied for non-payment. However, if your car emits less than 75g/km of CO2 then you are exempt from having to pay the Congestion Charge. And the very few vehicles which achieve this are mainly electric vehicles and hybrid models.
Get the feel-good factor
It’s imperative we all do our part in helping to undo some of the damage we’ve done to the planet, and as an added bonus, owning an eco-friendly car comes with a hefty dose of feel-good factor. Knowing that fuel-efficient cars help in reducing pollution and smog, as well as reducing our dependency on fossil fuels, it’s a strong reason to go green.
While there will be an initial outlay of cash, and you’ll have to consider carefully how you’ll finance it, the long-term benefits are undeniable. Besides helping you to save money, you’ll also be playing your part in saving the planet!
